No one wants to hear certain sounds coming from your heater. No matter what system you have, when they are running certain noises just come with the territory. The sound of air being moved around your home, the heater switching on and off, and air duct fluctuations, are all usual sounds that can be expected.
While some HVAC systems are quieter than others, you might be wondering what noises you should be looking or listening out for which is a sign that something is wrong.
A Clicking Sound
Take careful note of this one, as it could be a cracked heat exchanger in your gas-powered heater. This is particularly problematic as it means that carbon monoxide, which is colorless and odorless, may be leaking out of the system and circulating in your home.
If you hear this sound, call in the experts to take a look.
Your Heater Is Clanking
If you hear a sound that resembles metal hitting metal, then it may be your blower wheel. If you ignore this, you may find yourself in a situation where more damage is done to the entire system.
If this happens, you are in for an expensive repair, or an entirely new system installation. While heaters do clank from time to time, take note of any excessive clanking coming from your HVAC.
A Screeching Sound
If it’s not your neighbor or the cat next door, a screeching sound coming from your heater may mean there is an issue with your blower motor.
If you hear this sound and notice that the heat is not circulating in your home as it should be, there’s a good chance that the motor has failed in some shape or form.

You Hear Banging or Booming
If it’s not music coming out of your home speakers, it could be the burner in your heater. This is one you won’t want to ignore as it could be a serious issue. The booming you are hearing could be a small explosion taking place in your heater.
If there is a build-up of dirt in your system, gas will build up and ignite. This is not a good thing. Outside of the potential explosion issue, this could also cause a crack in your heat exchanger which will leak carbon monoxide into your home.
Rattling Sounds
This could be a simple loose panel and resolved with the tightening of a screw or two, but in rare cases, it could be a broken heat exchanger.
