How to Check Your Furnace’s Pilot Light
Checking your furnace's pilot light is a simple but crucial task that helps you ensure that your heating system is functioning correctly. First, locate the pilot light assembly – it's usually near the bottom of your furnace and includes a gas valve with on, off, and pilot settings. Before doing anything, make sure to turn the thermostat to its lowest possible setting or entirely off if possible, and switch the gas valve to the "off" position. Wait at least 5 minutes to give any remaining gas time to clear out. Then, turn the valve to "pilot," hold down the reset button, and use a long lighter to ignite the pilot light. Keep holding the reset button for about 30 seconds after lighting to ensure it stays lit. If it goes out, you may need to repeat the process or check for drafts that could be affecting it.
If your pilot light doesn't stay lit after a few attempts, it might be a symptom of a larger issue, such as a faulty thermocouple or a clog in the pilot tube.
